# What's a distribution list and when might I use one?
Last updated: 18/11/18 at 22:10
Distribution groups allow you to assign an email address, ie. firstname.lastname@example.org to a number of recipient mailboxes. This differs from an alias, as this only applies to a single mailbox.
Distribution lists can also include external contacts, so that could be someone outside your organisation, even using a different email address.
To set up a distribution list, please raise a help request telling us the name of the group email address, and the email addresses you'd like to be included within it.
